The 1980-1981 Webster Club nearly reclaimed the National Forensic League crown but finished second to Sioux Falls-Lincoln High School from South Dakota. Despite the narrow defeat, Marquette had another fabulous season, winning the Catholic Nationals Tournament and collecting many awards from tournaments across the country.
Though often an object of many a “webby” joke, the Webster Club remains probably the most successful group at Marquette University High School. The Webster Club is the only Marquette High group that competes on the national level and consistently places among the top or else wins the tournament. The main credit is due to Mr. Copeland who is nationally renowned for being among the best speech coaches. The 1981 Catholic Nationals saw Marquette High raise first place in the nation as a team and also saw an individual, Paul Grebe, take first in the nation in humorous. At the National Tournament in Salt Lake City, Marquette High placed an awesome second against very tough competition. It is the school’s hope that this fine tradition continues and that the Webster Club continues to awe the opposition.
