The Hilltoppers finished the 1970s in style by qualifying seven students to the National Forensic League National Tournament and another twelve to the National Catholic Forensic League Grand Nationals in 1979-1980.
Our MUHS Webster Club is divided into the speech team, including extemporaneous speaking, original oration, and humorous speaking, and the debate team. Together these make up the forensics team.
National championship titles did not come as easily as they seem to have come in past years for the Webster Club. However, due to a great deal of work and effort by coach Mr. James Copeland, the Webster Club has met this challenge. Seven members have qualified for the National Forensic League Tournament in Huntsville, AL. They include the debate team of Chris Zinski and Tim Wells, debaters Steve Girard and Ed Fish, extempor Bill Kolb, and orators Pat Hodan and Brian Dedinsky. The following participants will be sent to the National Catholic Forensic League Tournament held in Boston: Chris Zinski, Tim Wells, Steve Girard, Ed Fish, Mark Dybol, Bill Kolb, Paul Choi, Doug Binzak, Greg Grant, Mike Borman, Paul Grebe, and Pat Hodan.
As a whole, the Webster Club has done remarkably well within the state. Inspired by Speech Captain Paul Ziebert, the Club, as always, collected its share of trophies. This year the team travelled to such places as St. Louis, Atlanta, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, St. Paul, Pittsburgh, and Newark. Results on the road also were very fine.
