“Liberty and union, now and forever, one and inseparable,” said Daniel Webster as he strove to unite peoples of divergent views. Twelve decades later, Marquette’s Websters stand, steadfast and erect, to expound their ideas. Taking sides on the general topic, “Should the powers of the United Nations be broadened?” the young orators argued the need for orderly government and enduring peace; they insisted that Christian principles be followed in global negotiations. The talkative Hilltoppers also participated in forensic meets, where they attempted everything from extemporaneous speeches to dramatic interpretations. The senior Websters won more than their share of victories; and there was promise for the future in the record of the underclass group.
