While some Webster Club students participate in the West Bend Debate Tournament, others will be attending a workshop at Marquette University High School to kickoff the forensics season. Both new and returning students will get together to learn more about the program, discuss speech topics and interp pieces, and get to know one another as the 2006-2007 season gets underway.

While in-state competition doesn’t begin until January, Hilltopper speakers and actors will begin practicing during the fall with an eye toward repeating as State Champions for the fourth consecutive season. In addition to competitive goals, the team will attempt to dramatically expand participation through a multi-faceted recruiting strategy that highlights the benefits of participation while offering flexibility for busy students.

If you are unable to attend the workshop, please contact Mr. Batterman for more information about the team.

The Webster Club’s annual Freshmen Recruiting Night was successfully held on Wednesday night in the Audio-Visual room at Marquette University High School. More than 25 students and their parents were on-hand to learn more about the Webster Club and competitive speech—debate, forensics, and mock trial. Students were asked to indicate their interest on a form that was turned in to Mr. Batterman and they were contacted this morning with more information about the program. Freshmen are encouraged to attend varsity practices next week on Tuesday and Thursday after school and the Webster Club Debate and Forensics Orientation Night is scheduled for Wednesday, September 6th at 7:00PM at MUHS.

The most notable part of the Freshmen Recruiting Night was the leadership demonstrated by several of the Webster Club’s returning varsity members. Seniors Dana Skold, Patrick Carter, and Greg Herbers and junior Peter Anderson were on hand to represent the forensics program while seniors Gaurav Bhatnagar and Nolan Wanecke and juniors Garrett Fields and Jake Sirus represented their teammates from the debate squad. Each student shared a few thoughts with the freshmen and their parents, explaining a little about what they do as members of the Webster Club and sharing those benefits of their participation that have been particularly meaningful. Several students discussed the improvements in self-confidence that their participation in speech provided while others noted the academic, social, and competitive benefits offered by participation in the Webster Club.

A few photos from the Freshmen Recruiting Night are available below the fold.
