WDCA State Tournament of Champions Accomplishments

The Wisconsin Debate Coaches’ Association has been hosting the State Tournament of Champions since the 1991-1992 season. Since then, it has become Wisconsin’s premier championship event in Policy, Lincoln-Douglas, and Public Forum Debate. While Brookfield Central has put together a dominant run at the State TOC, Marquette has been one of the most successful programs in the tournament’s history and is one of only two schools (the other is Appleton East) to claim state championships in both Policy and Lincoln-Douglas debate.

Beginning with the 2006-2007 season, the State TOC combined with the Wisconsin High School Forensic Association State Championship to form the unified Wisconsin State Debate Tournament. In both 2006-2007 and 2007-2008, Marquette has cleared at least one entry to the elimination rounds of Policy, Lincoln-Douglas, and Public Forum Debate.

Policy Debate at the WDCA State TOC

Marquette won the Policy Debate championship in 2000-2001 and 2007-2008 and has finished as the tournament’s runner-up three times. The Hilltoppers cleared at least one team in seven consecutive seasons between 1997-1998 and 2003-2004 and have cleared 19 teams to the tournament’s elimination rounds over the past decade.

In addition to team accomplishments, Webster Club debaters have received five top speaker awards including three in a row from 1999-2000 through 2001-2002. In total, the Hilltoppers have received 25 top ten speaker awards in the last decade.

Lincoln-Douglas Debate at the WDCA State TOC

Lincoln-Douglas Debate was added to the State TOC as a fully-sanctioned event for the 2001-2002 season after being held as a probationary event in 2000-2001. The Hilltoppers closed out the finals in 2000-2001 and closed out the semifinals in 2001-2002, clearing a record five debaters to the quarterfinals. In total, 17 Marquette students have cleared to the elimination rounds in the event’s six-year history as a fully-sanctioned event.

Public Forum Debate at the WDCA State TOC

Marquette began competing in Public Forum Debate during the 2006-2007 season. In the two Wisconsin State Debate Tournaments since then, the Hilltoppers have cleared two teams to the elimination rounds including a semifinalist in 2007-2008.

Sweepstakes Awards at the WDCA State TOC

Before their recent elimination, both a Sweepstakes and Coaches’ Award were presented to the top teams at each year’s State Tournament of Champions. Any school with at least one varsity policy team and at least one entry in any two of the junior varsity policy, novice policy, or Lincoln-Douglas divisions was eligible to win the sweepstakes award. One point was awarded for each win recorded by the top policy teams and/or Lincoln-Douglas debaters designated for sweepstakes competition.
