Debate, Forensics, & Mock Trial at Marquette University High School

The Mock Trial Program

What is Mock Trial? What type of case will be covered this season?

Mock Trial is a timed contest between teams presenting a legal case in a shortened trial format to a panel of legal experts who then render judgment on both the merits of the case and the style in which it was presented. Students are placed into teams of 10-12 and are assigned roles within the overall structure of the case. Details on the case and the attorney and witness roles will be discussed at practices. Typically, the cases rotate from year-to-year between civil and criminal litigation.

In what types of competition will the Mock Trial team be involved?

Mock trial is unique in that it offers only three distinct tournaments of formal competition including a regional qualifier, the state tournament, and the season-ending national competition. The team will also compete in two “scrimmage” tournaments, one of which is hosted each year by Marquette.

When and where are practices for Mock Trial?

Practices are generally going to be 2 days per week and between 3-4:30 p.m., however, some evenings may be needed in order to facilitate working with our attorney coach. A full calendar of events will be provided. Practice is mandatory, and it is important to bring all case materials each day. Practice frequency will increase in weeks just before tournaments and when the initial case materials arrive. Our organizational meeting will be on Wednesday, November 8, 2006.
