The Webster Club’s first-year policy debaters made their debut this past weekend at the West Bend Debate Invitational and finished in second place to qualify for the Wisconsin State Debate Tournament. Competing against 16 teams from thirteen schools, the Hilltoppers’ four-person team compiled a 5-1 record. On the affirmative, freshmen David Glaubke and Brendan Schott were a perfect 3-0 while sophomores Joe Balistreri and Pierre Mewissen managed a 2-1 record on the negative. Cedarburg claimed first place honors based on a tie-breaker but all four Marquette debaters qualified for state.
The Hilltoppers also had a successful weekend in the Varsity policy division, one of the squad’s rare forays into the four-person division. Eight Webster Club debaters combined for a 7-5 record and the four-person team of Ben Benson, David Gebhardt, Jacob Sirus, and Noah Charles earned fourth-place honors with a 4-2 mark.
